An error occurred when updating NVM on X710 card

$

I have total 12 hosts running Windows Server 2012 R2 with a X710 card installed on each host. The current firmware version is 4.26.

When I updated NVM version 5.05, some of hosts failed with an error reported after flash has started. However there is not any error message logged on the log.

Do you want to save a backup copy of current NIC images? [Yes | No]: Y

After the failure, the Windows Device Manager showed "This Device cannot start". The nvmupdate reported "Update not available" and the card version is blank.

I tried to boot to EFI shell and ran nvmupdate64e.efi. The adapter status also showed "Access error". It looks like the card cannot start due to incomplete NVM flash? Is there a way I can "get back" my card, such as force update the firmware even the card was down?

Hi Osirus,

Given other person also experiences the same thing, I'd suggest to clarify this matter with Gigabyte support as our I211 was integrated to their motherboard and there might be customization to exhibit such behavior.

There are new drivers (or driver "packages") available, version 22.1:

Downloads for Intel® 82579V Gigabit Ethernet PHY

It's the same for your l219-v:

Downloads for Intel® Ethernet Connection I219-V

I noticed that several of the latest drivers for my NIC, "Intel Desktop CT" doesn't really provide new drivers, that is up-to-date. So it seems nothing is changed. Except that I'm missing PROset tabs and other optional stuff that had been working before. I installed the latest package "Intel Network Adapter Driver 22.1" dated 3-15-2017, but in the properties for the adapter it says 05-26-2015 and driver version is 12.7.28.0. So I guess I can't really say anything about this driver.

@Blackkatt: Any news? Have you tried it out?

And can Intel please provide any info as what is going on, how the investigation is going?

Hi,

tnx. I think we already tried this, but we had some problems with loading drivers. We'll try again and post results here.

Meanwhile, how can we check is there any packet drops/errors on VF and PF?

ethtool -S enp6s0f0 shows no errors or drops

Hi Ryan.Lee,

Thank you for the post. What is the exact model and serial number of your X710?
The original version you have looks different. You can locate the serial number on the white sticker with bar code on the network adapter itself. format usually goes like 15 digits + 6 digits + 6-3.

Thanks,
wb

Hi AlexeyDM,

Good day. Please be informed our engineer team is aware of this reported issue, but there is no timeline for the fix in next release. For the meantime, you can continue to use the EFI version of QCU for your setup. Please let me know if you still have other inquiries. Thank you.

Hi wb,

As I am at a different location as what the machines/cards are, any other way I can get the serial number remotely, such as Windows command or administration tool?

I have no questions anymore.

Thank you.

Hi,

in first post I forgot to write down full NIC model, it is Intel XL710-QDA2.

We tried to update FW and got following error/status (Update not available):

- if you retry the commands 2 or 3 times they complete succesfully

- during boot the cards are not configured.. Boot hangs with messages.

Hard reset is needed.

In what correlation are i40e and i40evf drivers are? Can newest version i40evf driver work with older version of i40e or vice versa?

Pls find attached dmesg log.

Hi BD, Based on the 82599 SR-IOV driver companion guide, need to set vlan ID tag in the VF driver. There's also additional information mentioned in the PF driver regarding vlan filter in page 38 of the same document.

Hi Ante,

Further checking Dell is the best route where you can contact as they sometime adjusts the hardware or firmware of the card which  the information is known by them only. Hope this clarifies.

Hi BlackBargin,

Please feel free to provide the result of driver update. As mentioned in our ReadMe notes:
https://downloadmirror.intel.com/13663/eng/README.txt

""We recommend the newer 2.6 based kernels, as these kernels correctly configure the PCI-Express configuration space of the adapter and all intervening bridges. If you are required to use a 2.4 kernel, use a 2.4 kernel newer than 2.4.30. For 2.6 kernels we recommend using the 2.6.21 kernel or newer.

 Hope this help.

Hi Mate,

Thank you for the additional information provided. There is this "Cisco(R) Ethernet Converged NIC 5.04 1583 00:006 Update not XL710-QDA2 available" entry. Is this an onboard OEM NIC?

Can you help clarify?
